Social Media Optimization – Why Do It And How? Social Media Marketing | June 9, 2010 | By Aaron Schoenberger

Another wonderful day in the social media world! Ahhhhhhh… Take a whiff of that.

I just got off a call with a decently sized corporation that contacted me for advice regarding a multi-million dollar social media marketing campaign they had invested in which is, unfortunately, not making the cut. Money has been poured into creating a robust, well-designed website that interacts with social channels, and all of the proper social media marketing mediums are being utilized, but website traffic and ROI remain relatively low.

What’s the solution? Well, Don’t mind if I do…

Social Media Optimization (SMO) is, in essence, the icing on your fluffy marketing cake. Without a nice scrumptious layer of icing, what good is a well-prepared cake? “A-ha! A-ha!” (I love that clip from Coming to America).

To increase traffic to social media campaigns and produce maximized results, a strategic blend of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and social media marketing must occur. The goal is to not only create ingenious social content and interact on a personal level, but to do so in a way that ranks well in search engines (and within relative sites such as YouTube). The best, coolest, most supercalifragilistic blog can fall flat on its face if nobody can find it via organic, natural channels. $10,000 can be spent on a viral video only to receive 1,000 views in a month. These are major issues that compromise the future profitability/stability of one’s marketing effectiveness and business as a whole.

So as not to leave everyone hanging, the above-mentioned company and I will be making the following changes (among many others) to their social media marketing campaign:

  • All YouTube content will be optimized for SEO
  • Company blog will be optimized for SEO
  • Social bookmarks will be optimized for SEO
  • Twitter account will no longer post promotions/sales and will instead focus on informative, interesting Tweets that contain relevant keywords
  • The rest I’d tell you but I’d have to kill you.

I hope this article has been helpful and good luck everyone! May zee force be with you!

Sincerely,
Aaron Schoenberger
