However, over the years I’ve heard a ton of horror stories about SEO consultants that don’t help businesses, but actually hurt them. Don’t make that mistake.

I may sound like a broken record, but it’s imperative for you to ask prospects for information on their track record. Have they been successful with their SEO efforts? Have they produced results for a local business with little competition or a global brand?
Not all SEO consultants are created equal, so you must quiz them on their strategy (sounds crazy, I know). Do they rely on outdated, penalty-prone business directories to build backlinks or do they take a content-centric approach to SEO? The goal is to ensure the SEO consultant’s strategy is aligned with industry standards and doesn’t violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines or other guidelines.
If an SEO consultant says they worked on a site and shows you the results they’ve produced, how do you know they were actually the one who produced the results? Simple answer: You don’t. Ask for references to ensure the person you’re looking to hire is the real deal.
