I don’t like being a stickler and speaking about negativity in the world, though there are times (like these) that constructive criticism can transform a downfall into a huge success.
In particular, why the heck are most museums still relying on old school, boring marketing mediums to attract visitors? It’s ineffective, costly, and environmentally unfriendly. Let’s fix this.
For all museums throughout the world, the internet — namely Social Media — is truly your friend. All of us web savvy people are inspired, interested, enthused by online content and dropping boring marketing tactics in favor of viral videos, blog posts, online contests, games, social networking, SEO, etc. is what forward-thinking is all about.
An ideal museum marketing campaign will include a skillfully choreographed blend of Social Networking, Social Bookmarking, Blogging, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Viral Videos and most importantly content: Museum exhibits. For example, take a cool viral video of an exhibit and share it on YouTube. Offer a contest to Twitter followers. Have a Social Media Night and invite local bloggers to help spread the word. There are many things that can be done.
In conclusion, I feel that museums can maximize exposure and increase the amount of visitors that pass through their doors by strategically and professionally utilizing Social Media marketing channels. Bam! ‘Nuff said.
