Tonight I’ve been analyzing a new client’s website and noticed a big problema; one that can tremendously harm search engines rankings. The client has a website built in WordPress and, like many other sites I’ve seen over the years, they have gone tag crazy.
Most people have the notion that the more tags the better as it allows you to stuff keywords on a page. Boy oh boy are they wrong. Creating a bunch of tags and failing to take additional SEO measures (blocking the tag pages from search engines) is a failure of grandeur proportions. Additionally, wasting valuable link juice on tag pages is like telemarketing in the year 2010 — It just doesn’t work.
My new client, unfortunately, has over 100 tag pages that have been crawled by search engines and about 20 of the said pages have a PR score of 3 or higher. This means that useless tag pages are building PR when these “points” should be directed towards pertinent content thus increasing website traffic and ultimately boosting revenue.
To help remedy tag issues, my suggestion is to not use tags at all. Write concise, directed articles and tags are obliterated.
Sincerely,
