The other day I decided to indulge in a sammy from Subway and noticed a bright yellow sign staring me in the eyes like a deer in the headlights. Subway Restaurants, at least in Southern California, have adopted Social Media in a big, big way: Stereotypical photos of glorified vegetables have been replaced with a sign prompting guests to follow Subway on Twitter.
I was quite surprised when selecting my bread (Italian Herbs & Cheese thank you very much) to see a Social Media call to action staring me down. I had just gotten off a conference call regarding Social Media and, being someone that has been in the online advertising industry for 10+ years, it’s exciting to see restaurants and other businesses adopt Social Media marketing strategies. Before it was just a funny word, or when I really think about it, there initially wasn’t a word for the medium.
In Subway’s case, their push has taken precedence over other in-store displays which is a clear sign of how integral Social Media is. Companies, whether small or large, can no longer ignore it. Don’t believe me? Check out the below photo.
