If you’re an online marketer, a web savvy business owner, or someone simply looking to break into the field of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), you’ve probably noticed everyone talking about building backlinks, even paying for backlinks, but they never mention internal linking. What a big mistake.
Have you ever realized that, for almost anything you research, Wikipedia appears on the top of search engines? If so, join the crowd. This is due to an impeccable internal linking structure that disperses weight across all pages of the vast site and prevents commonly unused sections/URLs from getting de-indexed. I think Wikipedia is one of the best examples of strategic, ingenious internal linking.
My suggestion for the day: Don’t spend your time building backlinks from external sources when you have internal linking opportunities at your disposal. You’re sitting on a pile of SEO goodness and need to realize such. Yes, deep links (links to internal pages) are required to build the weight of internal pages, but after drilling (working) away for months you’ll see the light; or shall I say the black gold.
As a working example of my suggestion, the below image displays 5 articles on our company blog that all have a PR2 (highlighted in red). These are prime candidates for internal linking with targeted anchor text. (note: I consider high PR internal links anything PR2 and above, though a high PR for a main page, in my opinion, is PR5 or higher.)
In conclusion, no — PR isn’t everything, but it gives you a rough idea as to the quality of links directed to a page. And, keep in mind that internal linking does not eliminate the need for external linking, which is equally as important.
I hope this information was helpful and may the SEO force be with you.
