Doing the digital shuffle, sorting through (web) pages of news trying to find worthy information to share with devoted friends and followers on social networks, is a large part of Social Media Marketing (SMM). Unfortunately, finding the latest and greatest — the crème de la crème — of groundbreaking, helpful, catchy information is like finding a needle in a haystack. But as my German grandmother used to say in her heavy accent: “Zer are solutions to every problem.”
In this instance, Yahoo! Pipes is truly the solution. As Yahoo! describes the tool, “Pipes is a powerful composition tool to aggregate, manipulate, and mashup content from around the web.” Similar to Unix pipes, Yahoo! Pipes allow the combination of simple commands to produce a feed that fits anyone’s desires. Interested in Social Media? You got it! Cooking outdoors? Bam! Sports? Touchdown!
Some of the major benefits of Yahoo! Pipes, according to Yahoo!, include the ability to:
- Combine many feeds into one, then sort, filter and translate it.
- Geocode your favorite feeds and browse the items on an interactive map.
- Power widgets/badges on your web site.
- Grab the output of any Pipes as RSS, JSON, KML, and other formats.
I’ve been using Yahoo Pipes for around 5 months now, mainly on projects for clients, and it has performed exceedingly well. I suggest all CMOs, Social Media Marketing companies and consultants give Yahoo! Pipes a try and get a basic feel for it.
Please find a video below, which shows how to build a Yahoo! Pipe in just a few minutes.
Enjoy!
