We have been in the social media marketing game since the early days guiding the first initiatives for companies ranging from billion-dollar celebrity brands to Fortune 500 companies, and it’s cool to see the new generation of social media consultants being born… And we feel obligated to help them.
Going back to the beginning, the first question you should be asking is: What does a social media consultant do? And in a nutshell, a social media consultant is someone who’s paid their dues and been on the grind managing campaigns, creating strategies and ultimately success which gives them the street cred to then provide guidance to others.
One misconception many people have is that they can become a social media consultant without first being a great social media marketer, and that’s just not how things work. Looking at martial arts as an example, you must first be a practitioner and learn before becoming a master then a teacher. And a teacher is what a true social media consultant is.
A key nugget of advice we can give to the next generation of social media marketers and consultants is to toss all of the things you’re hearing and reading out the window and focus on creating your own science experiments – first a hypothesis then testing the results. Post A led to B, however X led to Y that created a much better result. Run tests and form your own opinions.
Hopefully this post sheds some light on the social media consulting space and if you have any questions hit us up! Whether you’re a college student trying to find your path or a company that needs help, we’re here.
