The social media marketing industry is seeing a major shift now where artificial intelligence (AI) is taking over and the artsy, theoretical approach to social media marketing that usually didn’t work in the past is definitely not going to work in the future, and we wanted to drop a quick post on this.
First and foremost, as we’ve mentioned previously, the concept of if we build it (create some self-serving content) they (customers) will come/purchase is flawed from the beginning and goes against all of the reasons why social media was formed in the first place: To actually be social. Thinking you’re somehow special and people will flock to you simply by posting and not caring/engaging others is absolutely wrong.
Secondly, those same personality types and social media agencies that promote fluffy stuff and try to speak the lingo are the same ones that usually don’t get what’s actually going on in the industry at a high level. And that’s coming from us guiding the biggest companies in the world for nearly 20 years and internal teams asking us to watch over outside agencies for marketing, etc. to see if they’re on track.
Thirdly, looking at the world today any social media marketing team needs to understand the basics of AI if they’re going to be successful, and that’s everything from understanding the cover images to choose for Instagram Reels that match up with the descriptions and hashtags (multimodal algorithms they run internally) to all of the other complexities below the surface – what 99% of people understand.
The simple answer is yes: If your social media team isn’t familiar with how AI works and is being implemented in social networks they’ll inherently fail, though there are ways to fix that now and we’re here to help.
